Thurrock 34 v 28 Chelmsford
RUGBY returned to Oakfield and Thurrock were almost full strength after the 3 weeks break. In heavy conditions the visitors belied their lowly league position with a game plan and they stuck to this frustrating the home side all the way through the first half with Hoult for the visitors adding 3 penalties with Tim Blundell 2 in reply as Thurrock ended the half trailing 9-6
Thurrock now had a breeze in their favour but a category of errors within the opening moments as a clearance kick came off a Thurrock player, the loose ball missed the outstretched arms of a Thurrock defender and Chelmsford winger Acorn touch down deep into the corner.
A yellow card to Thurrock prop Jarrett Crouch for apparent infringement at the scrum galvanised Thurrock into a 15 minute spell that won them the game. They ran in the first try from Hagen Mumba directly under the posts, Blundell added the conversion, then back to full strength Joss Nunn added a brace, and it was Crouch who added a fourth all converted by Blundell to lead 34-14
Credit to the visitors, gifted an intercepted try by Hoult who added the conversion they grabbed a point with the last play of the game as they pressed for another score, as back row Ellis went over, Hoult adding the conversion with the final kick of the game.
This week a trip to Amersham & Chiltern who are top of the league and stated “Chiltern face a stern test next Saturday as we entertain Thurrock, who are riding high in the league and in good form. It will give us the chance to avenge the narrow defeat in Essex earlier in the season”
