Rugby: Thurrock bounce back against Ruislip

THURROCK 34 v 27 RUISLIP

THURROCK bounced back from last week’s defeat with very much a Jekyll and hyde performance. The visitors were kept in the game mainly thanks to Thurrock errors. The side got off to the perfect start as a move from the base of the scrum and quick for Freddie Russo to outpace the Ruislip defence to score in the corner, the conversion from Tim Blundell fell just short. Ruislip came straight back into the game following a penalty given away at the restart, they moved the ball through phases when a try saving interception was knocked on and the yellow card was given to try scorer Freddie Russo.

They defended stoutly but the pressure told as a try close to the posts made for a simple conversion to gain a 7-5 advantage. Thurrock were playing all the rugby as Blundell missed a long range effort, but moments later had another opportunity and this time made no mistake.

Thurrock continued to press and Charlie Russo added Thurrock second try again the conversion was wide, and again Ruislip made most a Thurrock’s defensive error almost immediately after to rehain the lead 14-13, but Tim Blundell then jinked his way through to score under the posts also adding the conversion for 20-14 lead at the break.

Ruislip had a good start to the second half taking the lead with a well worked try, and penalty shortly after were now leading 24-20 and Thurrock now faced very rejuvenated visitors. But Thurrock upped the gears and in a fantastic spell of rugby scored two further tries from James Flavin and prop Jarrett Crouch, Blundell kick both conversions putting Thurrock 10 points ahead.

Deep into time Ruislip added a penalty to bring them within 7 points, and with the restart being the last play they tried to run from deep but to no avail as the referee blew for full time following a misplaced pass. Overall a good performance but will have a lot work on the training field to cut out errors which allow team to stay in the game, also to convert pressure into points which is vital in the run in. this week Thurrock visit Old Priorians (Ealing) kick off is 2.00pm
