Rugby: Good away win for Thurrock

THURROCK arrived at Old Priorians to find the main pitch out of action and found them playing on a postage stamp with the ground being very heavy with water towards both ends. As expected the home side made a much brighter start with Thurrock very much on the back foot as they tried to adapt to the conditions, not helped by numerous penalties given away at the breakdown. They scored a well-deserved try, converted and then they added a further penalty to lead 10-0. Thurrock gradually started gain some momentum and at last got on the scoresheet with a Tim Blundell penalty as both teams slogged it out mostly between the 22’s

Injuries first to Grand Scott and then Tom Worsfold just before and at the break saw the introduction of Dan Thompson and Bradleigh Retigan to become a centre partnership, the home side who was now under pressure and Tim Blundell added a second, he was then yellow carded for interference at the ruck, but the pattern of the game remained unchanged and Jake Barrand added a penalty while Blundell was off the pitch. Back to full strength it was the home side who was penalised and lost a player and Blundell added two further kicks to lead 15-10

Time was ticking down but the home side had a rare visit to the Thurrock 22 and won a penalty to make it 15-13

With the clock ticking Thurrock kept pinning back the home side into their own half, as the nervous final minutes loomed both teams knew that one mistake would probably be the game, a long range drop goal from Blundell went wide, but from the resultant drop out 22, Retigan caught the ball and stormed into the corner much to great joy from both players and supporters to secure the win, Blundell then took away a losing bonus point for the home team with a conversion from the touchline, the ref then blew the full time whistle which was greeted with further joys of relief. Another gutsy performance and weeks rest before they face Brentwood at home on 13th February kick off at Oakfield is 3.00pm
