THE Speaker for this month at West Tilbury WI was Heather Kendel the fund raiser for St Luke’s Hospice at Basildon.
This hospice was opened twenty five years ago by Diana Princess of Wales and the demand for beds has increased with more houses being built and thus more people coming into the area.
So when land was donated to the Hospice in the Horndon-on- the Hill area it was snapped up. Plans are to build another hospice here to take the pressure from Basildon. The hospice offers other services to terminally ill patients and their families.
There is no restriction on visiting, accommodation is provided for the family, there is also day respite care.
The One Response programme has been running for one year, this is for anyone diagnosed with palliative needs or end of life needs to get help quickly. This also includes people with advanced dementia. A new Hospice shop is to open shortly in Chadwell St Mary Grays Essex.
On our June Meeting it will be Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, President Joanne Phillips has asked everyone to bring a friend to join our celebrations. Several trips out are in the pipeline a trip on Pocahontas along the Thames in August, also a tasting session at Waitrose.
