THOUSANDS of ex-battery hens are up for grab in Thurrock this month.
The offer is from not-for-profit animal charity Fresh Start for Hens.
Prospective hen-owners have been asked to make a reservation online before arranging collection in Thurrock on March 19.
A small donation is required for each bird to cover the purchase of the birds from the farmer and distribution.
They are also advised to visit their website if they are ‘new to hen-keeping.’
Guidelines on the site advise: “As a general rule, keep a minimum of three hens. They won’t need much space.
“Ex commercial birds are particularly friendly and make wonderful pets and will continue to lay eggs for years.”
A spokesman for the charity said: “This is a large rehoming. We hope to ensure that every single one goes to a wonderful new home as a pet and we need people’s help to make this happen
"FSH is committed to rehome as many hens as possible so they can live out the rest of their natural lives. When the birds are collected from the farms they are distributed throughout the country to a network of distribution points where they can be collected by their new owners.
