Football: Long ban and £22K fine for East Thurrock’s Lewis Smith over betting offences

THE Football Association has confirmed the length of a ban given to non league footballer Lewis Smith for betting offences – and announced he has been fined £22,865.

Smith, 26, who has been a key player for East Thurrock United this season, scoring 20 goals, has been banned until August 2017. He will miss the run in to East Thurrock’s Ryman Premier League title chasing campaign and the whole of next season.

In addition he has had to pay the costs of his hearing before an Independent Regulatory Commission at Wembley, last Wednesday. Smith, has the right of appeal.

Smith was found guilty of placing or attempting to place 28 bets on football matches played between 7 April 2012 and 23 April 2013. At the time his was on the books of AFC Hornchurch.

The player was also warned as to his future conduct.

TH FA says the full written reasons for their decision will be published in due course.
