THE quality of Thurrock’s air has been in the headlines over the past year, especially around Lower Thames Crossing discussions.
On Monday (9 May) Thurrock Council launched consultations into a new draft Air Quality Strategy and Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) action plans for Tilbury, Aveley, and the Purfleet by-pass.
There is growing evidence of the impact poor air quality has on health and the environment and Thurrock has 16 declared AQMAs with another two pending (Aveley and Purfleet).
Last year the council decided to develop an air quality and health strategy to review the current evidence, and look at options to tackle the causes and sources of poor air quality in the borough.
The strategy also identifies possible policies and actions to reduce exposure.
The consultation offers people a chance to look at and comment on any or all of the documents which include maps, details of proposed improvement measures and explanations of why other measures are not being taken up.
