YEAR 5 students at Benyon Primary School took part in the third of a series of ‘Catching Words’ workshops on Tuesday 3 May with Genevieve the Story Builder from the Children’s Discover Centre. The students have already worked with Adisa the Verbaliser in two poetry sessions.
Benyon Primary School is working with Children’s Discover Centre to focus and accelerate the students’ progress in writing, enrich the experience of writing and support them with their literacy. Genevieve worked with the students on the meaning of literacy terms such as simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia and alliteration. The students had to identify these in a story she told. They then looked at great ways to open a story to engage the reader from the very beginning.
Genevieve Robinson, the Story Builder said: ‘It’s been really great to deliver these outreach projects in Thurrock schools. It’s so rewarding to see the children’s writing skills develop and the pride they take in creating their own storybook.’
The ‘Catching Words’ project is just one part of the Royal Opera House Thurrock Trailblazer programme. Thurrock Trailblazer is an innovative programme of high quality arts and cultural activities, visits to heritage sites and specialist teaching training, which aims to help with school improvement.
All Thurrock primary, secondary and SEN schools are invited to join the Thurrock Trailblazer programme, and Royal Opera House is currently recruiting for Thurrock Trailblazer 16/17. For more information, please go to www.roh.org.uk/trailblazer
