Pupils pass special firebreak course in Corringham

By Eric White

A GROUP of schoolchildren have passed a special Firebreak course in front of their teachers, family and friends.

Students from Woodlands School, in Basildon, received certificates after passing at Corringham Fire Station on Friday, May 20.

The five day course, which was funded by the school and the Community Safety Partnerships, included wearing specialist breathing apparatus, climbing ladders, taking part in mock-rescues and using powerful hose reels.

The teenagers were helped throughout the week by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service instructors.

Sub Officer Terry Williams, lead instructor, said: “The pupils have been amazing and have worked extremely hard while showing great enthusiasm and dedication.

“They really put their training into practice at the passing out in front of their family, friends and teachers. They should all be proud of their efforts.”

Jimmy Connor, Behaviour for Learning at Woodlands School, said: “I would like to thank the instructors for their efforts with the pupils over the week.

“The students have grown in confidence and have taken life skills back to their classrooms.”
