SOUTH Essex College students were celebrated last night at the College’s annual awards event.
The ceremony, which celebrates individual academic achievement, effort, determination and attendance, took place at the College’s Thurrock Campus in Grays town centre.
Awards were handed out to the best students in each subject area from the three campuses in Southend, Basildon and Thurrock, with an overall champion picked from all the winners.
Harry Carnaby, Level 3 Production Arts (Technical) student won the big prize – South Essex College Student of the Year.
Harry, 18, from Wickford was shocked to receive the award. He said: “I was not expecting to win. I have enjoyed every moment at the College – Jo, Brian and Guy have been amazing tutors.
“After College, I want to pursue a full time job in the industry. I also have my own production and event management company called Allstarz Productions, I hope to continue to grow this too.”
Special guest, Heidi Webster, handed out the awards to students. Heidi, a former 3D Design student at the College, has gone on to forge a successful career in floristry working for The Queen, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake.
Heidi gave an inspiring speech to the winners, their families and staff members. She said: “Keep learning, no matter what you do keep your ears open, learn from others mistakes, absorb information and develop yourself. Keep pushing, listen and learn!”
She added: “I’m so proud that I went to South Essex College. I loved my time there, I loved the diversity, opportunities and encouragement.”
Principal and Chief Executive of the College, Angela O’Donoghue CBE, said: “Celebrating Success is one of the highlights in the College year and one of the favourite parts of my job as Principal. Our students come from all walks of life and our aim at the College is to create high quality learning opportunities for a wide range of people.
“Congratulations to all of the winners. I hope this will spur them on to even greater achievements in the future.”
