Thurrock Choral society set to hold annual summer concert

THURROCK Choral Society will be hosting its annual summer concert on Sunday 3rd July at 5pm at Thameside School Hall, Manor Road, Grays, RM17 6EF. The programme includes a performance of Handel’s work ‘Semele’. This is described as an ‘operatorio’ as it has elements of both an opera – with solo arias and an oratorio – with choruses.

It has a mythological flavour – a tale of mortals and gods, love and lust, ambition and deceit – all these emotions being played out in some beautiful solos and stirring choruses. As usual the society’s musical director Crispin Lewis will conduct and the choir will again be accompanied by the renowned Bridgetower Trio, composed of James Widden (violin), Alison Holford ‘cello) and TCS’s regular accompanist, Elspeth Wilkes (piano).

Sandra Wilkes, the society’s chairperson says: ’We at TCS are delighted to be performing this notable work and are looking forward to welcoming our wonderful soloists and trio, all of whom have successful, professional careers in London and further afield. The evening promises to deliver a very high standard of singing and musicianship in comfortable and welcoming surroundings. If past concerts are any guide, the audience will experience a richly rewarding evening’s entertainment’.

Wine, juice and nibbles will be available in the interval and the raffle will have excellent prizes. There is ample parking adjacent to the hall. Tickets cost £8 (concessions £7, accompanied under 16s free) – and can be obtained from the TCS Concert Secretary on 01375 377640. Further information about the concert and the society in general (including details of how to join) can be accessed on the website: www.thurrockchoralsociety.org.uk
