FOR the third year, Thurrock Council’s Catering Services have achieved the prestigious ‘Gold Food for Life Catering Mark’.
The service serves over 6500 meals a day in 29 primary schools and academies across Thurrock, providing children with healthy meals made with locally sourced, organic ingredients.
Less than five percent of Local Authorities (just 10 out of 217) in the UK achieve this standard.
Martin Sawyer, Chief Executive of Soil Association Certification, said: “Serving menus to Gold Catering Mark standards can significantly reduce carbon emissions and supports local businesses so this is a win-win for planet-friendly food and the local economy.
“Thurrock Catering Services is leading the way in the drive to improve food culture in the UK.”
Portfolio Holder for Health and Education, Cllr James Halden, said: “A huge congratulations must go to the Catering Services team and all their staff for achieving this award once again.”
He added: “The lunch time dinner at school can often be the most nutritious, healthy, balanced meal of the day for some of our children.
“We know good nutrition improves attention, memory recall and energy through the school day so having this award recognising how well we’re doing is very welcome.
