Bulphan WI: July report

By Jan Curtis

CAROL Allen, a Denman tutor came along to our June meeting with boxes of beads, gems & wires ready to show the members how to make a bracelet while telling us how she got involved in making jewellery & the path to becoming a teacher. She also answered member’s questions on repairing broken items & restringing pearls.

Members left at the end of the evening adorned in their new bracelets & informed about the craft.

The Committee for 2016/2017 was announced as President & Village Hall rep Janet McCheyne MBE, Vice-President, Thames Group & Media Jan Curtis, Treasurer, Thames Group & MCS rep Margaret Berry, Secretary Lesley Crisp, Minutes Secretary Carol Davis MBE, Outings Sally Wall, Asst. treasurer & supplies Pam Bowles, New members & visitors Monica Gardner.

Five members attended the National Federation of Women’s Institutes AGM which was held in Brighton. Linda Allen was a delegate voting on behalf of our WI as well as 2 others on this year’s resolutions. The debates & speakers were very well received by the 5000 members who attended. The members who went as observers ended up with their picture in that weekends Sunday Telegraph!

21 members & friends went along to a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Sadly it was the day after MP Jo Cox was killed so members from Orsett, Bulphan & Fobbing & Corringham Institutes laid flowers in Westminster Hall in her memory. They also visited the Jewel Tower then went on to Borough Market for a meal.

Thursday14th July meeting is an outing to a fashion show at Bon Marche in Basildon.
