Thurrock artist is taking Johnny Foreigner to Jaywick

JAYWICK Martello Tower is proud to present its summer exhibition, Johnny Foreigner, by Thurrock-based artist Lata Upaddhyaya.

The series of works is based upon Lata’s own experience of migrating from the East to the West.

Lata engaged with other diverse communities and opened dialogues with other people who have similarly experienced migration to the UK. The work expresses their experiences, culture and changing ways that they perceive their own identities.

Lata created each work by utilizing objects, symbols, images, material, memories and treasures and presented them in a clear suitcase, symbolically ‘packing’ unique identities into a small number of items. These suitcases represent the motion of the journey and the indefinite significance that these journeys continue to have on our lives.

To accompany the exhibition a series of free workshops taking participants on a round the world creative trip will take place starting with Chinese Calligraphy on Wednesday 6 July at 11am.

The Tower is open throughout the summer from Wednesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays from 10am until 5pm. Admission is £1 for adults and free for under 16s. For more information, visit www.jaywickmartellotower.org.
