NEWLY introduced rules (October 2015) require letting agents to publish information about the fees they charge, which government-approved redress scheme they have signed up to and whether their client’s rent and fees are protected.
Thurrock Council’s Trading Standards team visited 33 letting agencies in May and have been providing them with advice on fair trading, deposits, repairs and tenancy agreements.
However, recently officers have found some agents are not complying and 13 have been issued with a notice of intent. Those breaching the rules can face a fine of up to £5,000.
Cllr Rob Gledhill, Leader of the Council, said “These requirements provide essential information to residents and it is important that they are implemented across the borough.
“Despite officers engaging with the letting agents and offering advice and guidance, some are not doing what is legally expected of them.
“I encourage those agents who have been contacted by Trading Standards to respond fully and make this information freely available to residents.”
