Stanford 2nd XI – 282-4
Benfleet 2nd XI – 165 all out
Stanford 20 points, Benfleet 3 points
STANFORD’S second string took 20 points from Saturday’s home encounter with Benfleet after racking up 282-4 off their 45 overs.
Openers Alex Ellis (31) and James Pearn, with his first second team half century, put on 90 for the first wicket. When Ellis was caught off the bowling of Jack Sullivan it brought Duncan Page to the crease who set about sending the ball to all parts of the ground for his 79.
He was ably supported by Captain Drew Robinson (45) but the batting honours belonged to the teenage Pearn who played some sumptuous drives on his way to 62 before being dismissed whilst trying to hurry the score along.
Jack Sullivan (1-37 from 9 overs) and Thomas King (2-62 from 8 overs) were the pick of the Benfleet attack.
With a run rate of more than six an over it always looked like a tough ask for the away batsman and so it proved with only Aaron Mitchell with a well-crafted 93 and Ellis Warwick (22) getting into any fluency against the home bowlers.
Neil Fuller, Martin Hathaway and Jamie Gray picked up a brace of wickets each leaving the tail for skipper Robinson to clean up. He finished with figures of 3-2 from 1.4 overs but was denied the chance of a hat trick as Benfleet’s number 11 was unable to make it to the crease through injury.
