Grays Athletic moving back to Grays: Perhaps not so "Pie in the sky" anymore

SEVERAL years ago, proposals for Grays Athletic to move back into the area, was dismissed by Thurrock Conservative councillors as "Pie in the sky".

But it looks like things are slowly coming together for the team that has endured a nomadic existence for over six years.

A reference is made to Grays Athetic in a new proposal by William Edwards School to build a new school.

The document states: "William Edwards has a national reputation for sporting excellence and this strong sporting ethos will be prevalent in the new school and enhanced by its proposed location.

"Situated close to Thurrock Rugby Club and Thurrock Harriers, the new school will be placed at the heart of a sporting hub of excellence.

"Discussions are also ongoing with the Local Authority about the possibility of bring Grays Athletic Football Club back into Grays as part of this sporting hub".

Speaking about the proposals, the former "owner" of Grays Athetic Andy Swallow said "Since stepping back from the day to day running of the club towards the end of last season, I have been working hard to fullfill my commitment to return the club back to Grays.

"This announcement is very welcome and I will continue to work with the school and council to make this proposal a reality and return the club back where it belongs at the heart of the community in Grays"
