A GLORIOUSLY sunny Bank Holiday Monday as Thurrock travelled to Bridge Road to take on AFC Hornchurch.
Both teams start steadily and ten minutes in a late tackle on James Goode gains Thurrock a free kick some thirty yards out. Glenn Poole takes the kick short to Goode who curls the ball to the far post where Sam Mott takes it cleanly from the air and sets Hornchurch on a break down the right wing resulting in George Purcell heading wide.
The game swings back and forth. Thurrock respond with Junior Appiah feeding the ball to Ronnie Winn to send in a cross that’s half cleared to Reece Morgan to half volley over. Hornchurch send a long ball through the middle which is dealt with by Lewis Clark.
Thurrock win a corner and Joe Christou’s first shot is blocked in the middle of the box but it comes back to him for a second chance which is cleared off the line by Alex Bentley. Bentley is soon in Thurrock’s half sending in a cross that Richard Halle heads clear.
Hornchurch take the lead in the thirty seventh minute as the ball bounces around the area until it falls to Purcell who drills it past Darren Behcet. [1-0]
With Hornchurch looking to extend their lead Richard Halle and Lewis Clark both head clear before Ross Wall makes himself some space on the left hand touch line and finds Reece Morgan who hits another goalbound volley heart breakingly blocked. Last moment of the first half and a close range header from David Knight is magnificently palmed away by Behcet.
Half Time: AFC Hornchurch 1 Thurrock 0
Things get worse for Thurrock after the restart, two minutes in Hornchurch get a corner which Dave Collis plays to the far post for an unmarked Elliot Styles to sidefoot home from close range. [2-0]
Thurrock continue to make chances trying to reduce the deficit. Christou’s throw is half cleared and he heads the ball back in again but Hornchurch clear. Ronnie Winn picks up the ball from a Junior Appiah headed clearance and carries the ball into the Hornchurch half, a one-two sees him continue his run to the byeline and win a corner.
The final fifteen approaches and Thurrock are getting closer but still cannot breakthrough. Joe Christou’s throw is played into Glenn Poole’s path, he puts his laces through the ball and Mott makes the save of the game to palm the ball around the post. Poole’s outswinger is met by Halle but he can’t get all the way over the top of the ball and it clears the bar. Charlie Stimson, who had replaced Ross Gleed earlier in the half, once again lets the ball run under his feet to Ross Wall behind him and receives it back deep in the box. Stimson is pushed wide but finds a composed ball for Halle to hammer towards goal but again it is cleared this time to Lewis Clark but once more the shot is blocked.
Junior Appiah brings the ball out of defence through the middle of the park and again it is Ross Wall enabling a one-two pass to let Appiah continue into the area, he finds Stimson who gets the ball trapped under his feet and can’t get a shot away.
Last throw of the dice sees Morgan win a corner, Mott punches the ball of off Halle’s head to concede a corner on the other side, Halle is again on the end of it but again over the bar.
A disappointing result with encouraging passages of play and Thurrock will go again next Saturday when they visit Great Wakering Rovers.
