Major traffic problems as power failure closes Dartford Tunnels

2240 hrs

Tunnels have re-opened

2220 hrs

M25 Kent – M25 Dartford Tunnels closed and severe delays anticlockwise between J2, A2 (Darenth Interchange) and J31, A1306 (West Thurrock), because of equipment failure.

Diversion in operation – vehicles under 4.0 metres tall can use the Blackwall Tunnel, although there are long delays on this route. Congestion to J3, M20 (Swanley Interchange).

Drivers wishing to use the tunnels from Kent to Essex at the Dartford crossing are being advised to seek alternative routes as Highways England attends to a technical issue affecting safety systems at the tunnel.

The incident is affecting critical traffic management systems at the Dartford Crossing and both tunnels between junction 2 (for the A2) and junction 31 (Thurrock) of the M25 have been closed for safety reasons.

We’re working hard to resolve the problem and will re-open the motorway as soon as it is safe to do so.

Road users are advised to consider alternative routes; there are severe delays on the approach to the tunnels.

Vehicles currently being held within the closure between junction 2 of the M25 and the tunnels will be released through the tunnels via a convoy so that they can safely get on their way.

Traffic on the M25 heading in the anti-clockwise direction will be diverted off the M25 at junction 2 via the Blackwall Tunnel. Traffic travelling in the opposite direction can us the Queen Elizabeth II bridge as usual.

Before setting out on journeys drivers should check travel conditions. Highways England provides live traffic information via its website www.trafficengland.com, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile apps. Information is also available from Twitter as well as services in other regions.

Providing they can do so safely, road users can also call the Highways England customer contact centre on 0300 123 5000 to keep up to date with traffic conditions.
