STEPHEN Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon & East Thurrock, has welcomed news that the number of people in work across the UK is at a record level.
In South Basildon & East Thurrock, the number of people claiming the key out of work benefits has fallen by 1,226 since 2010, representing a 53% drop.
As well as the rate of employment continuing at a record-high, today’s figures show that there are more women in work than ever before, average wages are growing ahead of inflation, and the number of children living in workless households is down.
Mr Metcalfe said:
‘Today sees another set of record-breaking figures, with the rate of women in work at the highest since records began and the number of young people out of work down by hundreds of thousands.
‘The number of people in our local area relying on the key out-of-work benefits has fallen by over a thousand since 2010 as businesses are able to get more people into work, helped by the decisions Conservatives in government have taken to strengthen our economy.
‘Beyond the figures, every time someone takes the step back into work a life can be transformed for the better. It is crucial that the government maintains its focus on building a Britain that works for everyone and redoubles its efforts to support the most vulnerable in our society back into employment.’
