FA Trophy Preliminary RoundWitham Town 2 v 1 AveleyBy Jamie MantelowThe FA Trophy just doesn’t seem to be our trophy with our last win coming many years ago against Essex Senior League side Ilford FC.Due to the departure of Millers longest serving manager Justin Gardner, Club Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Ryman League, Craig Johnson took charge of his first competitive match in 17 years. The Millers dominated the ball in the opening stages of the match, but the hosts were the ones really creating opportunities in and around our box. Before the game you would’ve probably been happy for a draw, and when a wonderful strike from Perry Dunn levelled things up two minutes into stoppage time, but heartbreak as an error at the back gifted Witham a 95th minute winner. It was a bright start from the Millers as Olumbe Olliwatimilehin had a rasping effort from 25 yards go over the crossbar. Minutes later Abs Seymour was making a nuisance of himself down the left hand side, he pulled out a cross into Sherwin Stanley but he couldn’t direct his header towards the goal and the chance was lost.Down the right hand side Daniel McCullock looked dangerous as he, on so many occasions, waltzed past his marker but the final delivery was just not landing to any Aveley players.Witham did have chances of their own before their opener on 21 minutes. Korenteng had an effort affter a Ronto free-kick dropped kindly to him on the edge of the area, but a combination of George Woodward and Jack Edwards blocked the shot away. But on Witham’s next attack they took the lead. A ball over the top found ex-Miller Nathan Korenteng who calmly slotted the ball past Lamar Johnson with a deft left footed finish into the bottom corner. Witham 1-0 Aveley.Another good run from Daniel McCullock carved open another opportunity for the Millers, he raced past two players to get into the box, and his cross come shot missed the bottom corner by a whisker.Up the other end Lamar Johnson pulled off to good saves to keep the deficit at only one. The first Ryan Charles raced through on goal, but his effort was blocked by Lams who came off his line well on this occasion. The second was very important save with a few minutes left in the half, the ball found Ryan Charles after the Millers defence was caught napping on the ball, but Charles’ left footed pile driver was tipped around post by Lamar.Half Time | Witham Town 1-0 Aveley FC.In the second half the game really shoud’ve been done and dusted five minutes in, somehow Witham managed to squander three guilt edge chances in front of goal. The first was Scott Kemp, he saw his left footed effort hit the crossbar and landed to Tim Monsheju who somehow put it wide of the right hand post.Seconds after those misses, Scott Kemp had another about three yards out from goal, but Lamar Johnson stood strong to deny Kemp. The Millers really did have some guilt edge chances, a long pass form Abs Seymour put Daniel McCullock through on goal, he decided to take the shot first time, but just couldn’t generate the power and the correct placement to pull us level.Craig Johnson then made a couple of changes, with the likes of Emmanuel Ighorae and George Pullen coming on for the Millers.Daniel McCullock had another chance for the Millers, he seemed to go around the goalkeeper, but when he did fire towards goal James Regis was in the right place and right time to clear the ball off the line. It landed to Sherwin Stanley but the ball got stuck under his feet and the chance was gone. There was then five minutes added on time and two minutes into that the Millers finally pulled level. Perry Dunn was thrown forward, and a ball in from Daniel McCullock found Perry Dunn who took it down and brilliantly smashed the ball into the top corner, which seemed to have guaranteed a replay on Wednesday Night. Witham 1-1 Aveley. We almost won it too, an Abs Seymour cross into the back post just seemed to slide off of Daniel McCullock’s head and go just wide of the left hand post. Which in itself would’ve been one of the most dramatic of wins. But the FA Trophy hoodoo continued, a clearance found Scott Kemp free on the left hand side his cross was unfortunately dropped by Lamar Johnson and Elliott Ronto was on hand to tap into the goal from a couple of yards out to break the Millers hearts.
