Athletics: Gemma Holloway shines up on One Tree Hill

GEMMA Holloway was an outstanding winner at the opening Essex County League Match on Saturday. One Tree Hill was the spectacular venue for this event.Gemma has opted to run with the seniors this year, although she is still under 20. She dominated the race on Saturday, beating Davies of Springfield, 20 years her senior.The other individual winner Leon Wheeler took the under 15 race leading his team to victory too. This looks a strong group heading for the Winter. Ben Prior 11th, Harry Parker 18th and Jamie Mack 25th made up the victorious squad with Henri Willett 39th and Ellis Swindell 46th there as strong backup.The senior men, in spite of losing many members to marshalling duty, fielded 10 men and excelled to come joint 3rd in the team race which is the best they’ve done for a couple of years.Alec Finch pb’d in 7th place and looked as if he will improve on this through the winter. Three newly arrived under 20s from Brenda Stone’s group made all the difference.Sam Smith was an eye opening 24th, Jodie Meredith 31st and Oliver Mann 33rd. It was great to see Scott Rice back in action in 34th place. The six man team closed in with Anthony Tobin producing a promising 72nd place. Don Lawless 51st, Mick Bumstead 109th, Gary Rowlatt 122nd and John Russell 126th also finished. 190 fielded this race.Best of the rest Dylan Harrod was an excellent 5th in the under 13 boys leading his team of Kai Lovelock 16th, Noah Trencher 28th and Sonny Vehitt 29th to 4th place.Amber Pullinger was 4th in her first race in the under 17 group.Hannah Peacock had her best race to date to finish 9th in the under 13 girls race. Kelly Beardwell 32nd and Maddie Booty 37th were the other finishers.Joe Logan pb’d in the under 17 mens section with 10th place. Jack Exley was 15th in that event.Other finishers Under 15 girls – Amy Raven 25th, Emily Fall 26thSenior women Victoria Peacock 46th, Rebecca Barnard 61stUnder 17 women Lucie Ball 17thIn all 30 athletes took part with Thomas Peacock, yet another in this athletic dynasty taking silver in the under 11’s open race.Toni Radley became yet another County Champion from the Club on Sunday when she won the County 10 miles FV45 road championship in the Tiptree event. A good run on one of her favourite venues.Bernie Johnson can take satisfaction from his 5th place in the V60 group in the same event.Don Lawless and Pat Dobbs each won their sections at the Southern Counties Veterans Championships at Ashford. Don was pleased to duck under 40 minutes and Pat in the V75 section was pleased to continue his 40 year streak of winning medals.
