Opportunity Thurrock Celebrates fifth birthday

THOUSANDS of young people from Thurrock’s schools attended the London Cruise Terminal, Tilbury for the Opportunity Thurrock expo on Wednesday (5 October).Secondary schools, universities, colleges and employers from Thurrock’s significant employment sectors packed the large scale careers fair held on the banks of the River Thames.Now in its fifth year, the event organised by Thurrock Council gives young people a chance to find out more about a wide and diverse range of employers and learning institutions.More than 130 exhibitors ranging from local and national employers, further education colleges and universities were on hand to explain pathways into employment and further studies.Portfolio Holder for Education and Health, Cllr James Halden, said: “Opportunity Thurrock highlights the exciting prospects in further education, business and the creative industries Thurrock has to offer.”It gives young people the information they need to tackle the often difficult decisions they will have to make in the coming years. I want to make sure all young people are able to decide their own direction of travel once they leave school. Speaking at the event, Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Cathy Kent, said: “Seeing the young people at this event brings home the wide-ranging opportunities they have on their doorstep.”I want to thank the schools, the exhibitors and the team from Thurrock Council for organising a thoroughly successful event.
