THE Cleaner, Greener and Safer Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting (11 October) discussed options available to the Council to crack down on people dropping litter and spoiling the borough.
In recent months, extra resources have been put into the residents’ priority of improving the cleanliness of Thurrock’s roads and town centres.
To complement the clean-up work, Thurrock Council is introducing additional enforcement resources to fine those who drop the litter which blights the borough.
After discussing the options, the committee’s view was the 12 month enforcement company pilot should go ahead.
Speaking after the meeting, Chair of the Committee, Cllr Oliver Gerrish, said: “I welcome this new pilot scheme to see what impact it can have on the borough -Continuing as we are is not an option. The committee, the council and the residents want tough action against littering.
“It is the responsibility of everyone to not drop litter, and those who do so will be rightly be fined.
“I welcome the pilot scheme to see what impact they can have on the borough, and in reviewing its success all options should be on the table including bringing enforcement back in-house.”
