Football: East Thurrock take a point from league leaders

Vananrama National League South

East Thurrock United 0 v 0 Maidenhead United

EAST Thurrock worked hard to frustrate the league leaders and take a point at Rookery Hill.

The early stages showed why the Berkshire side are seven points clear at the top as they stroked the ball across the smooth Rookery Hill surface.

James Comley marshalled matters in midfield and it looked like a matter of time before they would score.

Alan Devonshire’s team were also very robust and the Rocks had a fair set of battles. But defenders such as Joe Ellul seemed equal to the task.

The referee seemed to be unable to give the Rocks the rub of the green or in other words, any protection.

East Thurrock seemed to be unable to make anything meaningful with their attacks.

In the 25th minute, the visitor’s keeper Carl Pentey made a great save when he pushed a Reece Harris header on to the bar.

The last chance of the half came with a Rock’s free kick on the edge of the area but Sam Higgin’s shot landed safely in the hands of the keeper.

The opening fifteen minutes of the second half was a much more balanced affair but East Thurrock had the best chance when Sam Higgins broke free, lobbed the keeper but the ball just drifted wide.

The Rocks had found their feet and enjoyed much more possession. However, Maidenhead were still dangerous especially when the Rocks were giving away free kicks outside the area.

The game went from end to end with chances for either side. It was a lovely flowing game with both teams looking for all three points. Dave Tarpey continued to look threatening as he darted down the right wing.

The Magpies had sub Jordan Cox sent off in the 80th minute for violent play as he clashed with the Rocks keeper.

The league leaders kept attacking and looked dangerous but East Thurrock’s defence were equally adept at frustrating and spoiling.

It seemed only fair that in the end, both sides shared the points.
