Football: Dockers hit four at the Abbey

Waltham Abbey 2 v 4 Tilbury

Ryman League North

Report by Anthony Mercer

TILBURY kept up their recent good form with another good away victory over Waltham Abbey. It was a quiet opening from both sides, with Jack Barham having the only effort inside the first 13 minutes. It was Barham who assisted the first of the game when his effort was blocked before falling to Lewis Francis who hit the ball on the outside of his right foot into the bottom corner. The Tilbury celebrations were delayed following a late flag, but the referee after consulting his assistant overruled and awarded the goal.

Tilbury were on the front foot, but a 25th minute strike from Sam Robbins brought Abbey back into the game. Tilbury had a succession of corners, with Simon Peddie having his header blocked on the line. The home side took the lead on 35 when a corner from the left was nodded home by centre half Spencer Harrison.

Four minutes before the break, Tilbury were back on level terms, when Abbey lost the ball in their own penalty box and Neil Richmond stole the ball and slotted home. Early in the second half Jack Barham came alive with his first effort saved, before heading just over as the half opened with early dominance from Tilbury. On the hour, both Tilbury wingers were in the action when Reece Hewitt crossed for Lewis Francis who saw his effort well blocked. On 62 minutes Tilbury went in front when Lewis Francis sent the ball through to Barham who outpaced the defence to score. Almost straight from the kick off it became 4-2 when Hewitt this time played a slitting ball through to Barham who again ran in on goal to round Lewis Lockyer who score a fine individual goal. On 70 minutes Tilbury had another great chance to increase the lead when Barham picked up on a strike on the home defence and played the ball to Neil Richmond who somehow hit wide. Tilbury were in control and saw the game out with substitutes Tony Martin and Kurt Smith going close late on.

Tilbury moved up fifth after this win, their highest position of the season and look forward to going into Saturday’s home game against promotion rivals Brightlingsea Regent.

After the game Assistant Manager Danny Smith commented “It was a sloppy first half from the lads, but the team took on board advice given at half time and ran out deserved winners”
