Football: Angels give Grays a devil of a day

Ryman Premier

Tonbridge Angels 4 v 1 Grays Athletic

The result went the way of the form book with a relatively comfortable win for the hosts in fifth spot against the visitors in bottom position.

Tonbridge totally dominated the first half and were good value for their 3-0 lead at the break. On 17 minutes a well delivered Luke Allen corner was perfectly met by Tom Phipp, his thumping header gave Amadou Tangara no chance.

Following heavy Tonbridge pressure Angels skipper Tom Parkinson was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. Alex Akrofi duly dispatched the spot kick via the inside of a post to put the Angels 2-0 up. Five minutes later Akrofi grabbed his second goal reacting quickest and firing home Allen’s cross.

Grays improved in the second half and reduced the arrears in the 49th minute through Luke Wilson. It may have been a scuffed shot but it deceived Tonbridge keeper Anthony di Bernardo. This gave hope to the Blues and Wilson in particular troubled the Tonbridge defence with his powerful runs. On 71 minutes he hit a Tonbridge post with the ball rebounding away from the goal area.

Deep in stoppage time Grays’ Barney Williams handled in the area and up stepped Andre McCollin to stroke home Tonbridge’s fourth goal.
