Football: Thurrock outclassed by leaders Maldon

Ryman Div One North

Maldon and Tiptree 4 v 0 Thurrock

Report by Mike Tongue

Fleet suffer a heavy defeat at the hands of the league leaders

A bad day at the office for Thurrock as they suffer defeat at the hands of Maldon & Tiptree.

It could have been a different story within the first minute as Ronnie Winn burst down the left wing and put the ball in the box for the waiting Joe Christou, unfortunately the ball didn’t bounce as anticipated and Christou just failed to connect. Perry Dunn then cuts out a forward pass and gets Thurrock on an attack which breaks down at the edge of Maldon’s area.

Maldon’s organised defence were very direct in clearing the ball to their forwards bypassing the midfield where James Goode, Perry Dunn, George Winn and Remi Sutton were kept busy but composed to deal with all that was thrown at them; anything coming through the middle ran into the veritable brick wall of Jordan Clark who seemed to always be in the right place.

Maldon spurn a cast iron opportunity when a cross from the right wing is flicked over the bar from six yards but ten minutes later they open the scoring. The ball works its way in from the wing and Rhys Henry shoots home.

Spurred on Maldon get forward again and several shots are charged down before Bobby Mason has to push the ball wide of the post. The half winds down and George Winn steps forwards to intercept and sends it out to Sutton, Sutton gets to the bye-line and pulls the ball back to Christou who makes half a yard, but his left-footed effort is wide of the mark. Patient build up in the final minute sees the ball fall to Charlie Stimson but Daniel Wilks claims the shot.

A lively start to the second half sees Maldon put a free header over the bar before a Christou throw is helped on by Stimson for David Cowley to hook wide. And then Maldon get their second as a fierce Kyle Hammond shot from the edge of the area finds the net.

Mason spreads himself to keep the ball out the net and Dunn heads clear of danger and Glenn Poole collects and sends the ball forwards for Clark, Cowley and Stimson to play the ball amongst themselves before Cowley gets room to cross into the area only for Gavin Greenfield to head clear of Christou.

As the hour ticks over Maldon again break with speed down the middle of the pitch, Dunn gets in a tackle to half clear the ball but it falls to Femi Akinwande to fire home. And seven minutes later the scoring is complete as Mason gets caught in possession trying to clear a back pass, the ball is passed back to Liam Nash who calmly lobs the ball over Mason’s head into the empty net.

Maldon are now content to drop back and present an impenetrable wall that try as they might Thurrock are unable to breach. Fleet almost scored a bizarre near consolation in the final minute though as a knock on somehow slips under Wilks’ feet and manages to wriggle between his legs before it is cleared off the line.
