Orsett’s Wildlife Hospital receives a £300 donation from the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund.

SOUTH Essex Wildlife Hospital, based in Orsett, is celebrating after receiving a £300 donation from the GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund.

Officially established in 1995, the rescue, rehabilitation and advice charity was set up to care for and rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in Essex, East London and North Kent. The charity operates a hospital and education facility and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It receives in excess of 50 phone calls each day has a full time vet team, operating theatre and x-ray facilities and receives approximately 10,000 casualties every year.

Sharon Davies, animal carer and fundraiser, says: “This donation from the GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund will go towards new veterinary equipment as we are always looking to improve the specialist surgical instruments available to our vets. This will also contribute towards new incubators for our orphaned hedgehogs and birds.

“Funding has become so much harder in recent years, and as a small animal charity we do struggle. We could not operate without the support of our 25 strong team of volunteers who care for our patients and the local community who support our work.”

GALAXY Hot Chocolate is looking to help small, local community projects, groups and charities across the UK and Ireland by donating cash awards to support warm-hearted people and projects.

Michelle Frost, spokeswoman for GALAXY Hot Chocolate said: “From our research, we know that across the UK and Ireland smaller charities and community groups are struggling to make ends meet despite the efforts of a huge number of warm-hearted volunteers. Seventy per cent of charities and organisations report that 51-100% of funds come from fundraising, with a further 68% stating that finding funds has become ten times harder over the past five years*.

“The GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund aims to give them a helping hand and hopefully inspire more people to get involved.”
Open for entries until February 26 2017, the Fund will distribute five £300 awards to deserving recipients every week. Applications to the Fund can be made on the GALAXY Hot Chocolate website www.galaxyhotchocolate.com.

This year, the Fund will also cast a spotlight on the unsung heroes working in the charity sector, through the ‘Outstanding Volunteer Award’. Every week that the Fund runs, a volunteer will be chosen by national volunteer organisation NCVO to receive a GALAXY Hot Chocolate Hero Hamper! So once you have registered your organisation for an award, why not nominate a volunteer who always goes the extra mile too?
