Athletics: Harriers shine at Essex Road Relays

Essex Road Relays

THE Essex Road Relays for seniors and veterans grow in popularity year on year. The 5k course on Dovercourt Esplanade is always breezy but popular with the athletes and this year 97 teams, men’s and women’s, toed the start line on Saturday. These included 4 teams from the Harriers.

Best team performance came from the FV35 ladies team who were 4th. Jodie Farrell 22.11, Victoria Peacock 22.01, and a great run from Toni Radley with a time of 20.12 lifted them to their excellent position.

On the men’s side solid first ten positions in the team race were achieved. Best times in order of speed were: Scott Rice 17.28, Keith Willett 18.32, Nigel Trencher 18.42. Best of the V50 were Don Lawless with 19.16, Mick Bumstead (V65) 19.25 and Jon Metcalf 19.43 who were the runners who cracked 20 minutes.

This weekend, for the first time for many years, the club will field a team in the Southern Road 12 stage road relay held on the first time at the Gravesend Cyclopark.

At the recent Southern Champs Marek Kowalski took gold in the long jump and silver in the 60m. His 10.41 triple jump just missed the medals but ranks him 4th in the UK.
