Thurrock VIPs were entertained by “budding Shakespeares” at the Civic Hall, Blackshots, Grays on Wednesday 22 March.

The borough’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Tunde Ojetola, was among the judges at the final of the Thurrock Performance Poetry competition and said afterwards: “Poetry is a good way of teaching students language, words and expressions.”

The annual event saw 20 schools taking part, who were sent a variety of poems, carefully selected for their rich language and children performed a poem of their choice.

Cllr Ojetola added: “My wife and I are proud of all the young people involved and it was really great to see so many talented children recite poetry like junior Shakespears.

“Congratulations to all the winners, the participants and the organisers, the parents and the schools involved. I look forward to secondary schools in Thurrock hosting similar competitions.”
