Ryman Div One North
Cheshunt 1 v 2 Aveley
Report by Jamie Manktelow
Blooming Good Win
GOALS from Jordan Peart and Mason Bloomfield, plus a penalty save from Lamar Johnson helped the Millers leave with all three points at play-off hopefuls Cheshunt. The hosts were desperate for a win to keep their play-off hopes alive and if other results went their way they would be only two points off the play-off places. However despite that it was the Millers who came out on top in an action packed game at Theobalds Lane.
The hosts did start the brightest and throughout had most of the play without doing much with it. Luke Illsley fired over the bar from the edge of the area and Lamar Johnson was on hand to save a Jason Hallett close range effort.
Mason Bloomfield had our first chance of the game from a Ross Gleed corner but it was a difficult chance as he headed wide of the upright. Jordan Peart had a slight chance from Ambers 18-yard line but his shot lacked the power to put us in front.
There was a controversial moment of the game came on 35 minutes as Lamar Johnson looked to have fouled Jason Hallett for a Cheshunt penalty, however, the referee waved it away. From that not given penalty, a ball through had Jordan Peart in on goal and he finished brilliantly past the on-rushing James May to give Aveley the lead.
Cheshunt came back strongly after Jason Hallett chested down to Joe Stevens who fired well over the bar.
The Ambers were gifted a chance to pull themselves back level after Hussain Jaffa mistimed his tackle on Stevens sending him to the floor. Lamar Johnson however was on hand to keep out Tom Bruno from 12-yards to maintain Aveley’s slender lead.
Aveley could have been 2-0 up just before the break as Michael Toner’s rasping effort was deflected wide for a corner and from that corner Mason Bloomfield saw his shot go inches wide of the left hand post.
It was clear to see that the Millers needed a goal for a buffer but to give them their credit Cheshunt came out brightly in the second half and were finding space early on.
The hosts were given another chance from the penalty spot and this time they drew level. Lamar Johnson came out and took out Jason Hallett and this time the referee didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot. Tom Bruno stepped up again and managed to blast his penalty into the back of the net and pull Cheshunt back level.
On the 56th minute it looked to have got even worse for the Millers after Cheshunt put the ball in the back of our net. But thankfully the officials spotted a handball by Luke Marshall.
It was only a minute later that Aveley went back in front. A delightful cross from Adalberto Pinto was met by Mason Bloomfield at the back post who applied the finishing touch to put the Millers back in the lead.
Jason Hallett again came close as his header effort was a whisker wide of our right hand post.
The Millers had a big chance to seal the three points but Mason Bloomfield was denied by James May in the Cheshunt goal.
Jordan Peart was a live wire throughout the game and he deserved a second goal late on in the second half. He dribbled from just inside our half past a couple of Ambers defenders but just couldn’t get a shot of to cap off a sublime move.
Despite it being 2-1 the Millers comfortably saw off the six minutes off added on time after good work from Jeremiah Maja, Ross Gleed and Adalberto Pinto.
The win sends us up to eight and three points off the play- offs with two games left to play… You never know the Millers might just gatecrash the party.
It’s a massive game on Monday evening when Aveley play their last ever competitive match at Mill Field against local rivals AFC Hornchurch. The Urchins need a win to hold onto third and push for second place for home field advantage in the play-offs, while the Millers need to win and hope other teams above drop points.
