THE Gateway Academy participated in its first ever ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ recently. The activities were aimed at promoting awareness of the Fairtrade brand and what this means for farmers and producers of the food products on sale.
Students had the opportunity to learn more about Fairtrade and purchase products during break times. As a result of its success, the canteen has begun stocking fruit and juices as a regular addition to their stock. In addition to the Fairtrade stall at breaks and events, there were competitions (10 bananas hidden around the school), quizzes and competitions.
The Academy are in the process of applying for the ‘Fair Aware Award’ and have a select number of students who are the Fairtrade Ambassadors. The students will be raising awareness during assemblies and selling products at events.
Head of Humanities, Mrs Delia Webster, said “I am incredibly proud of the students who have taken on the Fairtrade Ambassador role. I have every faith that they will take the brand forward and be a huge contribution to our quest for the Fair Aware Award. Watch this space!”
