Former top Thurrock Conservative steps down in Kent

WHEN Orsett councillor Mike Revell retired from Thurrock politics, we thought the veteran Conservative had stepped down from politics for good.

We were wrong. In 2016, Mike fought and won the ward of Burstead which is part of Maidstone Borough Council. It looked like quite a colourful contest as well as it was reported that a “favoured” local Conservative candidate, Denis Spooner, did not get the candidacy and stated as an independent.

It ended up being a close run thing with Mike Revell getting 890 votes and Denis Spooner polling 840.

But in April, Mike Revell stood down, for what are believed to be “family reasons”. Mr Revell has now moved away from the area to a rural village near Crawley, West Sussex.

Last week, Denis Spooner stood for the Conservatives and polled 1,713 voters, a winning majority of 1,460.

We wish Mr Revell all the best for the future.
