Thurrock Council leader makes further reassurances over cladding in tower blocks

Rob Gledhill Housing

THE leader of Thurrock Council, has gone on the record to explain why the council has not provided samples of cladding to the government.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill said: “The council has fully complied with DCLG request to provide detailed information on fire doors and the cladding used on 12 out of the 15 tower blocks in Thurrock. The Government subsequently did not request any further investigative work as the materials used are of the highest possible fire safety rating, Class 0. The Council is not required to send in material samples as the risk here in the borough is considered very low.

“However, for further reassurance, the Council has decided to send samples to an independent specialist to ensure that the most robust response is taken to protect our residents at all times.”

He added: “This action is purely precautionary but one that the council believes is right in the circumstances being experienced across the country at this moment in time.”

  1. I don’t trust the Council’s assurances about the cladding and, given the laxity of the regulations regarding the testing of cladding materials that has been in the news, I’m not very inclined to believe the results of the “independent specialist” either.
