Thurrock Labour mock Tory claims that untidy borough stories are “fake news”

Fly Tip July 17

THURROCK Labour has mocked claims by Councillor Rob Gledhill, the Tory Leader of Thurrock Council, that concerns about the untidy state of Thurrock were “Fake News”.

Councillor Oliver Gerrish, leader of Thurrock Labour said: “This beggars belief. Rather than trying to get to grips with the huge scale of rubbish and fly-tipping in Thurrock, Thurrock Tories seem more intent on denying the problem exists.

“Perhaps I could remind Councillor Gledhill that his team’s failure to hit environment targets was made very clear in a report to his own Cabinet meeting just last week. Is he dismissing his own performance as ‘Fake News’? Perhaps he wishes it was.”

The end of year corporate performance report was presented to Cabinet on the 12th July and represents a verdict on the first year in office of Thurrock Tories. Three key targets on the environment in Thurrock were failed:

Target: % Household waste reused/ recycled/ composted
Responsible Cabinet Member: Cllr Pauline Tolson
Outcome: Failed
Direction of travel: Getting Worse

Target: Street Cleanliness – a) Litter
Responsible Cabinet Member: Cllr Pauline Tolson
Outcome: Failed
Direction of travel: Getting Worse

Target: % of refuse bins emptied on correct day
Responsible Cabinet Member: Cllr Pauline Tolson
Outcome: Failed
Direction of travel: Getting Worse

“Contrary to the comments of Cllr Gledhill, it appears to be the Tories who are peddling half-truths, with each of these key indicators showing the condition of Thurrock getting worse on their watch.

Councillor Gerrish continued, “The Labour Group supports any efforts to clean up our borough. We don’t believe that the Tory administration is doing enough. We had to resort to a motion at full council in June to ensure that the issue of fly-tipping was taken seriously – and councillors from all parties agreed that more action was necessary to clean up Thurrock”

“If Councillor Gledhill wants to complain about coverage of his failure to hit targets, then perhaps he should ensure that they are hit. If not, then perhaps it’s time the Conservatives turned the administration of the council over to a more competent team. Thurrock Labour stands ready to clear up the mess the Tories are making.”
