Thurrock’s Elvis pays tribute to the King: Always on my mind

Dave Bates

IF you are of a certain age, then you will know where you were on August 16th, 1977, when Elvis died.

This reporter was youth-hostelling in Sussex but we thought we would ask Thurrock’s premier Elvis tribute artist, Dave Bates to recall where he was on that fateful day.

Dave said: “I was working a night shift on Thames Board Mills. I got home in the morning and my sister told me that he had passed away. I didn’t believe her. I went to bed. Then when I woke up, I realised it was true.

“I don’t mind admitting I cried my eyes out.

Dave keeps the flame alive by continuing to perform across South Essex.

Dave added: “Forty years on, the music is still as strong and vibrant. The Kings’ voice is still as potent and emotional. The people still love his music and so if I can keep the flame burning then I will.

Here is Dave in action a few years ago…
