intu Lakeside launches Changing Places facilities
NEW toilet facilities designed for people with severe disabilities have been installed at shopping and leisure destination intu Lakeside.
intu Lakeside’s Changing Places facility opened this week to support customers with profound and multiple learning disabilities and will also cater for people with other physical and non-visual disabilities who require extra equipment and space in a safe and comfortable environment.
It differs from intu Lakeside’s standard and accessible toilets with features that include an adult-sized changing bench and enough room for a disabled person and up to two carers. There is also a height adjustable sink and a hoist to help users out of their wheelchairs.
Neil Woodbridge, CEO of Thurrock Lifestyle solutions, officially opened the facilities at intu Lakeside on 30 August 2017. He said: “We have a very good relationship with intu Lakeside; lots of the people we support shop here regularly. It’s fantastic to have such an enlightened company to understand the needs of the whole community”
Anne White, Ambassador of Thurrock Lifestyle solutions, said “As many of you know we have campaigned tirelessly for the rights of disabled people in Thurrock. It is fantastic to see that intu Lakeside really listened and are providing an even more accessible shopping experience. This Changing Places fully accessible toilet means that all our friends and visitors to Thurrock who have more complex needs are able to be made comfortable in a safe environment – well done intu in leading the way!”
Marc Myers, general manager at intu Lakeside, said: “This important new space will ensure that customers who need a Changing Places facility can enjoy their shopping experience at intu Lakeside safely and comfortably. It’s one of a number of measures we’re introducing which includes training our staff to provide welcoming experiences for all.”
The new facilities are located on level 2 of intu Lakeside, on Brompton Walk.
