THREE UKIP councillors are making sure that two war memorials have flagpoles in readiness for Remembrance events this month.
Ockendon councillors, Chris and Jan Baker and their son, East Tilbury councillor James Baker took the action after noticing the absence of flagpoles in their respective wards.
Cllr Chris Baker said: “We all thought it would be nice if we could have a flagpole at every war memorial. I said to James let’s try and do something about this. I said I will ask a couple of local companies and James said he would do the same in his East Tilbury ward.
“We were both successful. James asked two local company’s, Walsh S & Sons Ltd and Thames Enterprise Centre and I asked S & J Self Drive Hire and HW Wilson Limited . We cannot thank these companies enough .
James has had a fantastic response from the local residents that he has informed and I have had a fantastic response from my local residents .
On Armistice Saturday James has arranged that father Justin Hutchinson to be in attendance and the local Scout’s group of East Tilbury will also attend .
At the South Ockendon memorial father Peter Rabin of the St Nicolas church will be in attendance so will our local Scouts group .
“2nd Para Lance Corporal Nicky Mason who was tragically killed in Afghanistan, his father Dennis Mason has given us the honour of raising our very first union flag at South Ockendon.
“Dennis is trying to arrange for a couple of the 2nd Para Regiment to attend one of which will play the Reveille whilst the union flag is slowly being raised .
