Jackie Doyle Price “Promising to see a significant drop in the suicide rate in England”

Jackie Doyle Price Remain

SUICIDES among young women have nearly doubled in the past decade despite overall rates hitting a 20-year low, figures show.

The suicide rate among women between the ages of 20 and 24 is at its highest point on record, with 118 women in this age group taking their own lives last year, compared with 67 in 2006 – a rise of 76 per cent.

Overall, suicide rates in the UK fell by 4 per cent last year, marking the largest decrease in two decades, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (
The rate of 20-24 year-old women taking their own lives increased from 3.3 per 100,000 in 2006 to 5.7 per 100,000 last year. Suicides among teenage girls aged between 15 and 19 have also increased, from a rate of 2.3 to 2.9 in the same period – an increase of 20 per cent.

While suicide among men remains considerably higher – accounting for three-quarters of all cases – experts have raised concerns about the unprecedented rise in young women taking their lives, highlighting the role of social media.

Chris O’Sullivan, of the Mental Health Foundation, told The Independent the rise in suicides among young women was linked to their relationship to the digital world, citing pressures on body image and the “selfie” culture, and urged that more research is needed on the impact of this.

“The group at the highest risk are middle-aged men, but young women are the ones that stick out in these figures, and we absolutely need to understand why this is by looking at the challenges they face,” he said.

“Young women and girls face an enormous range of challenges and a lot of these are emerging at a pace that adults don’t understand. The digital world and how young people relate to it is something we need more research on.

“And this particularly reflects young women and girls in terms of body image: The ‘selfie’ culture and the need for physical perfection. We need a better frame of understanding on the way modern life impacts on our mental health including our use of social media and other technology.”

It comes after figures published by the NHS last month revealed more than one in 10 teenage girls in England were referred to mental health or learning disability services last year.

Around 69,000 16- and 17-year-old girls received an open referral to NHS-funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities or autism services during 2016-17 – amounting to 11.4 per cent of this group as a whole.

A study by researchers at the University of Manchester, meanwhile, found that self-harm among young people aged 10-19 was three times more common among girls than boys, with those who self-harmed at much greater risk of suicide than those who did not.

Based on data from 674 GP practices across the UK, the findings revealed that annually between 2001 and 2014 on average 37.4 girls per 10,000 and just over 12 boys per 10,000 reported their first episode of self-harm.

In response to the ONS statistics, health minister Jackie Doyle-Price said:

Jackie Doyle-Price said: “It is promising to see a significant drop in the suicide rate in England and we are committed to reducing these rates even further.

“Every suicide is a tragedy and we continue to work tirelessly to prevent further deaths, but we are beginning to see our work pay off with almost all local areas having a suicide prevention plan in place.”

  1. I can sum up a large part of WHY in a few sentances.

The Last 40 years we have had NeoLiberlaism economics which has trickle down wealth to the top 1%. People cannot get on the housing ladder cannot have the same job for 40 years and all the other gems in moderm neoliberlaist economics

So the sum up the young under 40 are really in shit.

So what do new labour and the conservatives do. They give more money to the top 1% that will help the problem.

That suicide bus is getting frigging louder.

  2. Missing from the suicide statistics are the large number of suicides that are hidden because the coroner gives an open verdict or accidental rather than a suicide verdict as there was no clear evidence that the person intended to kill themselves and the Coroner has to use the criminal standard of proof, “beyond reasonable doubt”, when determining the cause of death. If these figures were included then the suicide rate would be much much higher.

The increasing use of narrative verdicts are also making it harder to calculate the real number of suicides in the UK.

The statistics she quotes show there were 5,965 suicides in 2016 compared to 6,188 in 2015 – hardly a ‘significant drop’.

  3. Sadly more suicides and deaths are on the menu for the NHS it is deliberate neoliberal policy to run it down so they can privatise it to American corporations like United Health and go to an insurance based system.

If I could put these Tory profiteers up against the wall I would shoot them

They did the same with Railways, Energy sector and no doubt in the future welfare. Oh and now they are owned by foreign corporations

JDP is fucking evil. the conservatives and new labour are all fucking evil.

  4. I probably should clarify things as I did use the same swear word twice in the last post. which is not good.

You see some of us see whats going on with New Labour and the conservatives/UKIP the running down of things make them a laughing joke then suggest privatisation as the answer and then they get bought by foreign corporations.

Some of us see this neoliberlaism thing we have had since 1979 as making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

But hey keep voting the same way time and time again expecting a different outcome.
In fact this is the definition of insanity

Face facts Freedom lost. we are now all wage slaves. only on zero hour contracts. In a hire and fire culture to the bottom.

    all that matters nowadays
is make as much money as possible.
our system is not capitalism but profiteering.
“make or seek to make an excessive or unfair profit, especially illegally”.

sadly the NHS was safe under thacher now the conservatives and new labour have hereby put it up for tender to the lowest bidder.

I thought I was a capitalist now I am a socialist or anything that is anti PROFITEERING.

  5. and the markets crash. I fear for the Bond Market. But hey this time its under a tory government. Bet they bail out the rich. with a new serf tax.

  6. CTB my friend, you have to get past this Tory bashing. At present there is no credible alternative and to be honest they will never listen. Socialism is old hat and no longer fits in with the UK spectrum.
It is a very sad time for politics and the population at large. We need a new party that will be fair for all.
Please don’t say Labour or Green cause that’s just laughable.

  7. I would hardly call UKIP fair for all. they are more right than New Labour or the Conservatives.

Suicides will be up with neoliberalism. its the Right wing sale ( Welfare Health, Education). Oh and lets scrap the State Pension if everything should be profiteering.

and when you get an Elderly private healthcare payer who is ill. Cut her off from Private Healthcare as she is a cost liability.

  8. Bitter because I can see the future and being under40 will be effected for a large part of my life with the above.
