Football: Thurrock’s final game ends with their heads held high

Bostik Premier

Staines Town 5 v 2 Thurrock

THURROCK’S last ever competitive match ended in defeat as Staines completed a Bostik Premier double in a match that was a personal triumph for Elliott Buchanan whose four goals secured the league’s golden boot.

Yet it had all started so brightly for Thurrock, who will now fold, as Ronnie Winn – later awarded Fleet’s young player of the year award – scored in the opening minute.

And things got even better seven minutes later when Jordan Clark grabbed Thurrock’s second.

However, by the break Stains had clawed their way back into the game and into the lead . Buchanan got his first on 23 minutes and added a second four minutes later and by the half hour mark Mohamed Bettamer had fired his side into the lead.

Two more from Buchanan in the last ten minutes of the match wrapped up the Swans’ victory.
Remi Sutton, who came off the bench for the last two minutes was then honoured with the supporters and players’ player of the year awards.

Club owner Tommy South, who has retired from the club as he recovers from ill health and was unable to find a buyer as a going concern, was named the clubman of the year.
