THE THURROCK Independent councillor for Aveley, Tim Aker, has warned against the government entering into a “Customs Partnership” as part of its plans for Brexit.
Cllr Tim Aker said: “Amid the joyous celebration coming with the Royal Wedding and the FA Cup final, look out for any buried bad news.
“For weeks now the issue of whether the UK enters into a ‘Customs Partnership’ with the EU after we ‘leave’ has been dangling over us. Soon we will know what the Government’s position is and whether our historic referendum vote was all for nothing.
Make no mistake, if the UK ‘leaves’ the EU and walks into a Customs Partnership with the EU, we will leave in name only.
You have heard it from the horses’ mouths. All Remain spokespeople said to leave was to walk away from the customs union and single market. Theresa May – when she wanted your vote – said that Brexit meant leaving the customs union and single market. Jeremy Corbyn was saying it for decades.
Yet they are both weak hostages to the political vandals lurking in their backbenches. They don’t want to listen to what you said. They want to sabotage the referendum and betray the will of 17.4 million people. Put that into context – that is the highest number of votes recorded for anything, ever, in the UK. It’s more than any political party has received at any General Election.
“A customs union means the same rules, collecting money for the EU, paying the EU contributions. There would be no option to make our own trade deals and most of our laws, again, would be written by someone else. It would be as far from taking back control as you could get. We would be going back into the EU.
