THURROCK council has agreed to investigate if it would be appropriate for sprinkler systems to be fitted in all the borough’s tower blocks.
The motion put forward by Thurrock Independents Party Leader Luke Spillman was aimed at exploring if it is necessary for the 15 tower blocks in the borough to be retroactively fitted with the sprinkler systems and if so, how it could be funded.
Councillors unanimously agreed to the motion at Wednesday’s full council meeting.
Conservative Councillor Barry Johnson said that residents of the tower blocks should be reassured that the borough is compliant with regulations and the council undertook investigations following the Grenfell Tower fire which broke out in June last year.
A Freedom of Information request from September 2017 revealed that none of the 15 tower blocks in the borough have sprinkler systems installed outside of ground floor bin rooms.
Surely the article should read ‘retrofitted’ and not ‘retroactively fitted’
