A THURROCK Councillor has discovered that he is a distant cousin with Bill Roache, the actor who plays Ken Barlow in long running soap Coronation Street.
Belhus councillor, Mike Fletcher appeared in a special programme, which aired Wednesday night on ITV called Coronation Street’s DNA Secrets.
The programme was based around taking DNA samples off a number of the stars and establish their ancestral make up.
Presenter Nicky Campbell told viewers that whilst trawling the DNA database, they found that there was Coronation Street fans who shared their DNA.
At that point, in front of an assembled Corrie cast, Belhus councillor, Mike Fletcher walked into the Rovers Return.
Mike said: “I was adopted. In 1996, I went about looking for my natural mother. I went back to the late eighteenth century.
“My great-great grandfather was from Tipperary”.
Bill Roache explained that the spelling of Roache is popular in the Tipperary area.
Then he got the shock that his DNA matched Bill’s.
Bill Roache said: “I tell you what we have in common: the nose!”
We look forward to Ken Barlow popping down to South Ockendon at the next election campaign.
