Football: Rocks hang on for precious point

Vanarama National League South

East Thurrock United 2 v 2 Truro City

THIS clash was billed as a Vanarama South relegation battle but was more of a handbags at five yard affair with little passion, vigour and quality from either side.

A draw, East Thurrock’s first of the season, was probably a fair result but both sides will need to get a lot better if they are to climb away from the danger zone.

An insipid first half was enlivened only by a City goal two minutes before the break when Tyler Harvey stole in at the far post to slot home with Rocks’ defence opened up by a pacy counter-attack.

At that point East Thurrock had failed to trouble Truro’s debutant young keeper Harvey Rivers, while home stopper Jack Giddens had been called into action a couple of times, most notably to save at the feet of the impressive River Allen.

There was still time for Rocks to threaten an equaliser but Shaun Batt breached the backline and, with better options available, elected to shoot and blazed the ball out of the ground.

Batt failed to reappear in the second half, replaced by Freddy Moncur and Rocks were better on the resumption and got back on level terms on 50 minutes when Moncur hooked the ball home from close range after being set up by Sam Higgins after the ball fortunately came back to him off the back of a prone defender who blocked his angled shot.

For a brief spell it looked as if East Thurrock might grab the game by the throat with some incisive passing but the moment passed and City took advantage of poor defending to regain the lead with another goal from close range, forced over the line by Dan Rooney on 69 minutes.

Rocks showed their resilience by coming back for a second time, with Danny Harris proving a dynamic force in terms of drive, and they deservedly restored parity eight minutes from time with a close range Higgins header.

In the closing stages the hosts might even have nicked it but neither Harris or the impressive Josh McLeod-Urquhart could get enough purchase on headers with the goal in front of them and the game ended all square.
