AMAZON in Tilbury welcomed primary school pupils to a day of educational fun at the fulfilment centre’s Camp Amazon.

Pupils from The Gateway Primary Free School enjoyed a morning of activities at Amazon in Tilbury, which included a behind-the-scenes tour of the fulfilment centre, and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) based workshop that simulated a day in the life of an Amazon fulfilment centre.

From organising inventory lists to stowing stock and shipping customer orders, Camp Amazon offered pupils the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of an Amazon fulfilment centre and the rewarding career opportunities that STEM subjects offer.

The Tilbury site is fitted out with advanced Amazon Robotics technology. The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre. Find out more about Amazon Robotics here.

The students watched the Amazon robots in action and learned about working with the technology when they met with local Amazon engineer, Ali Ataya.

Speaking on the activity, Prajvin Prakash, General Manager at Amazon in Tilbury, said:

“Amazon is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders, which is why we wanted to welcome young, bright minds to our facilities and teach them how we innovate for our customers.

“Camp Amazon was created so students can see the wide range of possibilities a future career in this field has to offer and what skill sets are needed for success in today’s digital world. We hope the students enjoyed the visit.”

Joseph Kearns at The Gateway Primary Free School, added:

“On behalf of the school and our students, I would like to say a huge thank you to Amazon for spearheading this activity. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn and challenge themselves to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios. The students were also fascinated with the robotics and enjoyed learning about the innovative technology.

“Amazon’s STEM activity is an excellent example of the business community helping our students to ensure they have every resource needed to succeed academically. I am sure our students will be talking about today’s activities for months to come.”

The Gateway Primary Free School participated in Camp Amazon as part of the company’s ‘Amazon in the Community’ programme, whereby the company supports communities in and around where it operates in the UK.
