Thurrock Council: Second phase of housing allocation policy consultation underway

Second Phase of Housing Allocation Policy Consultation underway

THE second part of a consultation on Thurrock Council Housing Allocation Policy has got underway.

The consultation is part of a root and branch review of the policy which determines exactly how council homes are allocated in the borough and is the first major overhaul of the policy for nearly five years.

Specific proposals being consulted on include strengthening the local connection by increasing the amount of time applicants have already lived in the borough from five years to six; allowing key workers moving to the borough to start work to join the Housing Register through a new local connection qualification; increasing the financial threshold; and reserving 20% of the borough’s council housing for working households or families which contribute to the community through voluntary activities.

The consultation also asks for residents’ views on plans to remove Band Five, the lowest priority category which is usually given to people who already live in suitable accommodation, from the transfer list and offering alternative schemes for those in that category instead. Around 2,700 of the 7,500 people on the current housing list are in Band Five.

Cllr Barry Johnson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “Earlier this year hundreds of people gave us their views in the first part of our housing allocations policy and that feedback has been used to develop the proposals we are consulting on now.

“These proposals will allow us to deliver homes to those in need and give priority to local people who contribute to the community through their work or voluntary activities. I would urge residents to take part in this consultation and make their voice heard on this vitally important issue.”
