Royal Opera House exhibition A Stitch in Time set for the Thameside Theatre

A NEW exhibition entitled A Stitch in Time will showcase the activities of the Royal Opera House in Thurrock and the work of the textile group Kite Spirit. The free exhibition will be on display at the Thameside Complex from Thursday 3 January until the beginning of February.

The Royal Opera House has been working with communities across Thurrock since 2007. Since then, it has worked with schools, businesses, arts groups, choirs, artists, young people, communities and partners to offer new opportunities to discover the worlds of opera and ballet and the skills behind the production of stage sets, scenery and costumes.

Kite Spirit came together in 2014, following the pop-up Festival of Stories held at the High House Production Park and run by the Royal Opera House. Over the last four years, Kite Spirit has produced beautiful textile installations to commemorate national events such as the anniversary of the Windrush arrival and the commemoration of the end of the First World War.

The exhibition offers a snapshot of the work of both organisations today, showcasing the various projects, programmes and people involved across the borough. The Royal Opera House has piloted several of its national learning programmes in Thurrock and Royal Opera House Thurrock Trailblazer programme runs in many of the borough’s schools. The Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus goes from strength to strength and regular tours of the Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop and Costume Centre continue to inspire and inform.

A Stitch In Time highlights the ways in which the Royal Opera House and Kite Spirit have collaborated over the years, and also how Thurrock residents can become involved with the Royal Opera House, either through song, through education, as a volunteer, as an artist or by learning more about the backstage work of the talented craftspeople who create the worlds for the dancers and singers to inhabit on stage.
