Orsett Golf Club raise more than £15,000 for St Luke’s Hospice
MEMBERS of Orsett Golf Club have raised a fantastic £15,000 for St Luke’s Hospice through a series of fundraising events and initiatives held throughout 2018.
The Club chose to support St Luke’s Hospice as its Charity of the Year 2018, in memory of family members and friends who have received support and care from the Hospice. Kevin Lyons, the club’s Captain in 2018, and wife Jennie lost their daughter Michelle to cancer in 2011, when she was aged just 41.
One of Michelle’s closest friends, Gaby Ward, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Hospice, providing advice and support to patients in their own homes. Gaby helped care for Michelle through her work at the Hospice. One of Jennie’s friends was also cared for at St Luke’s Hospice at the start of 2018.
As its Charity of the Year, the whole Club committed to raising as much money as possible for St Luke’s Hospice and Club Captains’ Kevin and April set themselves the ambitious £15,000 target. Throughout the year, the Club hosted many fundraising events including the Captain’s Ball, Christmas lunches, parties, quiz’s, and raffles, to help raise funds.
Kevin said: “We’re so thankful for the care St Luke’s Hospice gave our Michelle and the support since, which is why we’re glad help the charity in this way. A huge thanks goes to all our members for getting behind us, taking part in all our events and donating. It was a real Club effort and I’m thrilled that together we have raised so much.”
April Glynn, the club’s Ladies Captain, said: “The Hospice’s services reach so many people in the community. Not only did Michelle have the care of St Luke’s Hospice, my sister has cancer and has visited the Day Hospice. I’m pleased we were able to help raise this money to help the Hospice continue supporting people.”
Kevin, wife Jennie, and April presented a cheque to Kerry Chambers, Fundraising Officer at St Luke’s Hospice.
Kerry said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Orsett Golf Club for this fantastic donation. This isn’t the first time Kevin has fundraised for the Hospice and we’re grateful for his continued support and rallying the whole Club to support us this year. St Luke’s Hospice provides essential services to so many in the community, not just end-of-life care, and we’re only able to do this with the support of dedicated fundraisers in our community.”
