Essex Senior Cup Semi Final
East Thurrock United 3 v 2 Billericay Town
EAST Thurrock United have booked a second trip in three years to the final of the Essex Senior Cup after a spirited win against high-flying Vanarama South neighbours Billericay in their semi-final at Rookery Hill on Tuesday (6 February) reports the Thurrock Independent.
The Rocks, currently fighting a relegation battle at the foot of the table, belied their league position to win Tuesday evening’s hugely entertaining match 3-2, twice taking the lead only for their promotion-chasing visitors, and the cup holders, to come back twice.
After a bright start when both sides had chances and East Thurrock were grateful for a goalline clearance, Alex Osborn shot the hosts ahead on 30 minutes, only for his unfortunate teammate Lee Burns to put through his own net moments before half time.
Ryan Scott’s close range header restored the lead on 77 minutes but the match seemed destined to go to penalties when Danny Waldren levelled with five minutes to go but on a night of remarkable resilience, Rocks won the game two minutes later when captain Sam Higgins fired home to set up a final meeting at Colchester United’s ground on Tuesday, 9 April when they will meet Chelmsford City – repeat of the 2017 final which City won 1-0.
